Level 2

Mastering the Fiqh of Menstruation

The Book of Hayd from al-Fatawa al-Tatarkhaniyya and Al-Muhit al-Burhani

The first level of Whitethread’s course, “Mastering the Fiqh of Menstruation,” was an in-depth study of Imam Ibn ‘Abidin al-Shami’s commentary on Birgivi’s Manual (Manhal al-Waridin). The course, taken by over 500 students, focused primarily on Imam Abu Yusuf’s rulings. However, students and instructors equally felt it would be beneficial to study Imam Muhammad’s opinion.

The second level of this course will now delve into relevant sections of Imam Farid al-Din ‘Alim ibn al-‘Ala’s Al-Fatawa al-Tatarkhaniyya (d. 786) and Imam Burhan al-Din Mahmud ibn Ahmad ibn Maza al-Bukhari’s Al-Muhit al-Burhani (d. 616). Students will attempt to extract foundational principles of Imam Muhammad’s opinion to understand his application of menstruation (hayd) and purity (tuhr) rulings. There will be a comparative analysis between the commonly applied views of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad. We will also explore other important opinions within the Hanafi school.

Course will to the end of January 2022

What our students say about the Level 1 course

"I have had a great, enjoyable and beneficial experience at whitethread institute. Alhamdulillah this course has taught me to understand correctly and to assist others confidently in the majority of day to day cases. I would highly recommend this to others especially to those who deal with these matters. Without a doubt, inshallah anyone who enrols in this course would benefit by expanding their understandings and correcting their misunderstandings."

Zarina Mayat

"Studying with Whitethread Institute has always been a beautiful learning experience for me. I especially like how Mufti Sab explains the masaail in depth and his patience and gentleness in answering all our questions. I highly recommend this course for Aalimahs as it covers so much in depth the Menstruation Masaail that we never learnt in our Aalimiyah course."

"Alhamdulillah the course has been an amazing learning experience which I found to be in depth, clearly explained throughout and taught in a most engaging manner. Being it the first time joining an online class, I was very hesitant initially- however I feel now I couldnt have made a better choice and would definitely recommend studying under respected Mufti Abdur Rahman saahib. We covered such things that I’ve never been taught in years of studying the topic."

Umme Maryam

"This course proved to be an invaluable experience. In teaching such a complex and intricately detailed topic, respected Mufti Sahab is providing a great service to all who seek to further their knowledge. He was very patient in fielding all of our questions and explained everything very thoroughly. I truly learned a lot, and feel prepared to apply what I learned. I highly recommend this course to those who are interested in cementing their understanding of menstruation, and to those who wish to become a resource for those around them."

Course Reading Material

The course will cover Kitab al-Hayd in Al-Tatarkhaniyya (excluding the isti’naf and mudhillah sections). It is highly recommended for students to read the text of Al-Muhit al-Burhani along with this.

While the text of Al-Tatarkhaniyya is based on Al-Muhit al-Burhani, it differs in that it presents multiple case laws (masa’il) without going into evidentiary proofs. The author primarily quotes from Al-Muhit, while adding relevant portions from other juristic texts. A better understanding of this will be ascertained as we complete the reading.

Course Details

Students will gain access to over twenty 1.5-hour session recordings, practice questions, helpful charts and diagrams along with access to resources. Teaching assistants will be available to help and support all students throughout the course. There will be an exam at the end of the course.
